DESIGN BY ANALYSIS (DBA) PER ASME SECTION VIII-2, DESIGN OPTIMIZATION

Design by Formula (DBF) approach is used for the majority of pressure vessels manufactured today. The formulas are proven based on many decades of collective industry experience and represent a safe approach to pressure vessel design. DBF has a limitation in that it is only applicable to standard geometries covered by the various ASME Codes (cylindrical, spherical). Furthermore, DBF tends to be overly conservative resulting in designs that may not be economical. For non-standard geometry and/or design optimisation we can use the Design by Analysis (DBA) approach. DBA establishes the maximum allowable load for the vessel design by performing a detailed stress analysis and comparing the results against prescribed Code limits. DBA requirements are prescribed in ASME Section VIII-2 to guard against all possible failure modes such as gross plastic deformation, collapse, ratchetting, buckling, and fatigue.
